Cloud Engineering Jobs in the UK 2026: Skilled Workers Only

Are you ready for a life-changing opportunity that could earn you around £70,000 a year as a cloud engineer — with employer sponsorship and a clear pathway to settle in the UK?

Advertisment

This page reveals everything you need to know about how to apply for cloud engineering jobs in the UK with visa sponsorship, including the best kinds of employers currently hiring, step-by-step application guides, and what to expect after approval.

Let’s be honest from the start.

£70,000 is not a guaranteed salary. It is the median on advertised permanent cloud engineer jobs in the UK over the six months to 16 October 2026, according to the job-market tracker IT Jobs Watch. Half of those adverts paid more, and half paid less.

“Skilled Workers Only” is real too. The Skilled Worker visa now covers jobs at degree level or above (RQF level 6). It needs a licensed employer, a minimum salary and proof of English, and most junior support roles do not qualify.

All figures were checked in October 2026. Confirm every number on GOV.UK before you pay for anything.

Why the UK Is a Goldmine for Foreign Professionals

Almost every UK business now runs part of its work in the cloud.

Banks, retailers, councils, software firms and telecoms companies all need people who can build and look after systems on AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud.

IT Jobs Watch counted 1,379 permanent adverts requiring a cloud engineer in the six months to 16 October 2026. For DevOps engineers, the count was 1,535.

The beauty of it?

Cloud skills travel. IT Jobs Watch puts the London median for cloud engineers at £77,500, against £70,000 for the UK as a whole, so you do not have to live in the capital to earn well.

Earn £70,000 Doing What You Love

Let’s talk numbers.

The table uses median salaries on advertised permanent jobs from IT Jobs Watch (six months to mid-October 2026). The dollar column uses 1.3253 dollars per pound, the Bank of England spot rate for 15 October 2026 as published by Pound Sterling Live. Rates move daily, so treat the dollar figures as a guide.

Job Category Average Annual Salary (£) USD Equivalent
Cloud Engineer (median, UK) 70,000 $92,771
DevOps Engineer (median, UK) 70,000 $92,771
Platform Engineer (median, UK) 80,000 $106,024
Site Reliability Engineer (median, UK) 80,000 $106,024
Cloud Architect (median, UK) 90,000 $119,277

Another named source points the same way. The Robert Half UK Salary Guide page for cloud engineers (titled as updated for 2027) shows £56,500 at the 25th percentile, £68,000 at the median and £78,750 at the 75th percentile.

For context, the Office for National Statistics reported median gross pay of £39,039 for all full-time UK employees in April 2025.

So where does £70,000 come from? It is the middle of the advertised market. IT Jobs Watch shows £50,000 at the 10th percentile for cloud engineers and £100,000 at the 90th.

Why Africans Are Succeeding in the UK

But you should know the current rules for your passport.

The UK “visa brake”, in force from 26 March 2026, refuses some entry clearance applications. According to a law-firm summary of the Home Office guidance, it affects the Skilled Worker route only for Afghan nationals. It does not apply to Nigerian, Ghanaian or Kenyan nationals.

Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya are on GOV.UK’s list of countries where a tuberculosis (TB) test is needed for stays of six months or more. A clear result is valid for six months from the date of your chest X-ray.

On English, the exempt nationalities on GOV.UK include the USA, Canada, Australia and Jamaica. Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya are not listed. You can instead use an approved English test or a degree taught in English that Ecctis confirms.

What You Get with Visa Sponsorship

The main sponsored route for cloud engineers is the Skilled Worker visa. It depends on a licensed employer giving you a Certificate of Sponsorship.

Here’s what this route gives you when you qualify:

✅ Permission to live and work in the UK for up to 5 years, with unlimited extensions while you meet the rules

✅ A route to settlement (indefinite leave to remain) after 5 years under today’s rules

✅ The right to bring your partner and children, who each pay their own fees

✅ Decisions that usually take up to 3 weeks from outside the UK

The visa belongs to the job. If you change employer, you usually need a new sponsor and a new Certificate of Sponsorship.

What Makes the UK Unique

The UK publishes a free, official Register of Licensed Sponsors (Workers) on GOV.UK, last updated on 16 October 2026, so you can check an employer before you spend a penny. It also publishes a salary floor for every job type.

For most Skilled Worker visa roles, the minimum is the higher of £41,700 a year or the “going rate” for the occupation code. That rule makes pay predictable.

Relocation Made Easy

GOV.UK says you need £1,270 in your bank account, held for 28 days in a row. The exception is when your employer certifies on the Certificate of Sponsorship that it will cover your first month’s costs, up to £1,270.

Some employers also offer a relocation payment. It is the employer’s choice, not a legal rule, and this guide does not name any company as offering it.

So ask who pays the visa fee and the health surcharge, and whether you must repay any relocation payment if you leave early. Get the answers in writing, and be careful with anyone who asks you to pay for the sponsorship itself.

Earning While You Build Your Future

Cloud engineering rewards skills you can show.

Certifications from AWS, Microsoft and Google, plus hands-on projects, can move you from the lower to the upper end of the range.

As you earn, build your UK financial record. Open a bank account and pay every bill on time.

Remember that your health insurance through the NHS is paid upfront as the surcharge.

You’re not just working — you’re thriving, one stable year at a time.

Quick Steps to Get Started

Check that your target job is at degree level (RQF 6).

Find licensed sponsors on the official register.

Get an offer at or above the going rate for your code.

Prove your English and collect documents.

Apply for the visa once your employer issues a Certificate of Sponsorship.

It’s that simple — in theory. In practice, each step takes time.

Why You Should Apply Now

Today’s rules are clear enough to plan around, and parts are about to change.

The Graduate visa shrinks from two years to 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027, according to GOV.UK.

Settlement English rises to level B2 from 26 March 2027, according to law-firm summaries of the March 2026 Statement of Changes. The government has also proposed a longer settlement wait, with no confirmed start date.

Top Industries and Companies Offering £70,000 Cloud Engineering Jobs with Visa Sponsorship in the UK

You already know that the UK is hiring international workers — now let’s dive straight into where the jobs are and who’s hiring right now.

One caution first. This guide does not name any company as a sponsor of cloud engineers, because we could not confirm a specific employer on an official source. The register tells you who holds a licence. Whether a company is hiring for your role is a separate question.

1. Industries Offering the Most Visa-Sponsored Jobs

a. Technology and Software Companies

Software firms run their own products in the cloud and hire cloud, platform and reliability engineers.

Perks include:

✅ Work on large systems

✅ Clear steps from engineer to senior and architect

✅ Platform engineer median pay of £80,000

Example: at £80,000 a year, you earn about £6,667 gross a month before tax.

b. Financial Services

Banks and insurers run regulated systems and need people who understand security.

Perks include:

✅ Strong demand for cloud security skills

✅ Structured training and certifications

✅ Large, well-organised teams

Example: a cloud security engineer at the IT Jobs Watch median of £75,000 earns about £6,250 gross a month.

c. Consulting and Managed Services

Consultancies move customers to the cloud and run it for them.

Perks include:

✅ Many different projects

✅ Fast skill growth across AWS, Azure and Google Cloud

✅ A path to solutions architect

Example: a cloud architect at £90,000 earns about £7,500 gross a month.

d. Public Sector and Health

Public bodies are moving services online and need cloud and security staff.

Perks include:

✅ Stable, long-term work

✅ Public-service projects

✅ Regular hours in many roles

Example: a DevOps engineer at £70,000 earns about £5,833 gross a month. Public pay scales can differ, so check each advert.

e. Retail, Telecoms and Media

Large online platforms must stay up around the clock.

Perks include:

✅ Work on high-traffic systems

✅ Strong demand for site reliability skills

✅ Hybrid working in many roles

Example: a site reliability engineer at £80,000 earns about £6,667 gross a month.

2. Best Companies in the UK for Foreigners

The table lists seven kinds of employer where cloud engineers are hired. No company is named as a sponsor.

Company Sector Benefits
Large software and platform companies (none named) Technology Not published
Cloud consultancies and partners (none named) Consulting Not published
Managed-service providers (none named) IT services Not published
Banks and insurers (none named) Financial services Not published
Retailers and online marketplaces (none named) Retail Not published
Telecoms and media companies (none named) Telecoms and media Not published
NHS trusts and public bodies (none named) Public sector Not published

To check any employer, download the Register of Licensed Sponsors (Workers) from GOV.UK. Search the organisation’s exact legal name, and look for an A rating and the Skilled Worker route.

A B rating means the sponsor is under a Home Office action plan and generally cannot assign new Certificates of Sponsorship. Being on the register does not mean a company is hiring, so ask the recruiter whether your role is open to sponsorship.

3. Average Salaries by Industry

Public data does not split cloud pay by industry reliably, so the table shows the official going rates for occupation codes IT roles commonly sit under. They come from the Home Office’s Appendix Skilled Occupations on GOV.UK, based on a 37.5-hour week.

Occupation (SOC 2020) Going Rate (£) USD Equivalent
2133 – IT business analysts, architects and systems designers 54,900 $72,759
2134 – Programmers and software development professionals 54,700 $72,494
2139 – IT professionals not elsewhere classified 52,300 $69,313
2135 – Cyber security professionals 48,500 $64,277
2137 – IT network professionals 45,600 $60,434

The employer picks the code based on your duties. We have not confirmed which code any cloud job title falls under, so ask which code is on your Certificate of Sponsorship.

For each code, the general minimum is the higher of £41,700 or the going rate. SOC 2136 (IT quality and testing) has a going rate of £41,200, so the £41,700 floor applies there.

4. Why Companies Offer Relocation Assistance

Hiring from abroad costs employers money. On top of your salary, the employer pays the Immigration Skills Charge. A law-firm summary of the rates from 16 December 2025 gives £1,320 for the first 12 months plus £660 for each extra six months for medium and large sponsors, and £480 plus £240 for small or charitable sponsors.

On a three-year certificate, a standard sponsor pays £1,320 plus four periods of £660, which is £3,960.

Some employers add a relocation payment. It is an employer decision, not a legal rule, so ask whether you must repay it if you leave early.

If a contract asks you to repay the sponsor’s own costs, ask an immigration lawyer to read it before you sign.

5. Real-Life Success Stories

Here is an illustrative case, not a real person.

A systems administrator from Lagos has a computer science degree, four years of experience and AWS certifications. She gets an offer as a cloud engineer from a licensed sponsor, at a salary above the going rate for the code.

Result: a Skilled Worker visa and a route to settle after five years.

6. The Commercial Reality

Let’s be honest.

Sponsoring costs employers money, so they choose carefully.

Some advertised roles say candidates must already have the right to work in the UK. That wording means the employer is not offering sponsorship for that job.

So target employers on the register, show certifications and project work, and ask early about sponsorship.

A visa also takes weeks. GOV.UK says decisions usually take up to 3 weeks from outside the UK and up to 8 weeks from inside, and you can apply up to three months before your start date.

7. What Happens After Sponsorship

Once you hold the Skilled Worker visa, you can work for your sponsor in the role on your Certificate of Sponsorship, for up to five years at a time.

If your sponsor loses its licence or your job ends, your visa can be shortened and you would need a new sponsor.

8. Why This Opportunity Is Time-Sensitive

Three real changes are worth knowing now.

From 1 January 2027, the Graduate visa lasts 18 months instead of two years for most applicants, according to GOV.UK.

From 26 March 2027, the settlement English requirement is due to rise to level B2, according to law-firm summaries of the March 2026 Statement of Changes.

In November 2025, the government consulted on moving the standard wait from five years to ten. As of early October 2026, law-firm trackers report no final rules and no confirmed start date.

How to Apply for UK Cloud Engineering Jobs with Visa Sponsorship — Step-by-Step Guide

If you’ve made it this far, it means you’re serious about landing a high-paying cloud job in the UK and securing your permanent residency. Now, let’s go straight into how to apply for the Skilled Worker route.

1. The Skilled Worker Visa Explained

The Skilled Worker visa lets you work in the UK for an employer that holds a sponsor licence.

Since 22 July 2025, jobs must generally be at degree level or above (RQF level 6). Lower-level jobs qualify only if they are on the immigration salary list or the temporary shortage list.

The immigration salary list has no IT occupation codes. So help-desk and operations technician jobs (SOC 3131) do not qualify for new applicants.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • A job offer from a licensed sponsor, with a Certificate of Sponsorship naming an eligible occupation code
  • A salary of at least £41,700, or the going rate for the code if higher, unless a reduced rate applies
  • English at level B2, proved by an approved test, a UK degree, an Ecctis-confirmed English-taught degree or an exempt nationality
  • Savings of £1,270 held for 28 days, unless your employer certifies maintenance

GOV.UK also lists a lower £33,400 figure for some applicants who do not meet the usual salary requirement, outside healthcare and education. Third-party guides describe it as the new-entrant route (under 26, or switching from a Student or Graduate visa) at 70% of the going rate, which would be £38,290 for SOC 2134. That is our own arithmetic, so check the official page.

2. Other Visa Categories That Lead to PR

a. Global Talent Visa (Digital Technology)

This visa is for leaders or potential leaders in digital technology. You need an endorsement first, unless you hold an eligible prestigious prize. You do not need a job offer.

GOV.UK shows a total of £766 (a £561 endorsement fee plus a £205 visa fee), plus the health surcharge of usually £1,035 a year.

GOV.UK says you may be able to settle after three or five years, depending on your field and how you applied. The bar is high, so it suits senior engineers.

b. Graduate Visa

If you study in the UK, the Graduate visa lets you stay and work afterwards. It costs £937, plus the health surcharge.

It lasts two years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months from 1 January 2027. A PhD gives three years.

You cannot extend it, but you can switch to a Skilled Worker visa. GOV.UK does not say that Graduate time counts toward settlement, so do not plan on it.

c. High Potential Individual Visa

This visa is for recent graduates of eligible universities outside the UK, chosen by global rankings. Your qualification must have been awarded in the last five years.

It costs £880, plus an Ecctis check of £252 and the health surcharge. It lasts two years (three for a PhD).

GOV.UK says you cannot settle on this visa and the time does not count toward settlement. It is a bridge to a sponsored job, not a PR route.

3. Step-by-Step Application Process

Step 1: Work Out Your Occupation Code and Salary Target

Look up the going rate for your target job’s code in the table above or in Appendix Skilled Occupations on GOV.UK. If the market median is £70,000 and the going rate is £54,700, you have room.

Step 2: Find Licensed Sponsors and Check Them

Download the Register of Licensed Sponsors (Workers) from GOV.UK. Check the exact legal name, the A rating and the Skilled Worker route. A company may trade under a different name from its licensed entity.

💡 Pro tip: Download a fresh copy before each search. The register changes often, and GOV.UK showed an update on 16 October 2026.

Step 3: Apply for Jobs and Get an Offer

Apply to roles that offer sponsorship, ask recruiters about the code and salary, and get the offer in writing.

Step 4: Prove Your English and Get Your Certificate of Sponsorship

Your employer assigns a Certificate of Sponsorship with a reference number. You must apply within three months of receiving it.

For English, you can use a UK school qualification, a UK degree, an Ecctis-confirmed English-taught degree, or an approved test with an approved provider.

💡 Pro tip: Ask Ecctis whether your degree can prove English before paying for a test.

Step 5: Prepare Your Documents and Pay the Fees

Here is what you will typically need:

  • The Certificate of Sponsorship reference number and a valid passport
  • Proof of English
  • Proof of savings, unless your employer certifies maintenance
  • A TB test result, if you are from a listed country such as Nigeria, Ghana or Kenya
  • Proof of relationship if a partner or children apply with you

Application fee (usually): from outside the UK, £819 for up to three years or £1,618 for more than three years, according to GOV.UK. From inside the UK, £943 and £1,865. Add the Immigration Health Surcharge of £1,035 per year.

For three years from outside the UK, that is £819 plus three times £1,035, or £3,924 for one person. Five years is £1,618 plus five times £1,035, or £6,793.

Step 6: Apply, Give Your Biometrics and Wait

Apply online, give your fingerprints and photo at a visa centre, and wait. You can apply up to three months before your start date.

💡 Pro tip: Do not resign from your current job until you have the decision, and book your TB test early, because clinic slots can take time.

4. Why You Should Use an Immigration Lawyer

A regulated immigration lawyer can check your code and salary, review your contract and explain settlement timing.

An immigration lawyer for work visa cases is especially useful now, because settlement rules are under review.

5. Building a Strong Credit and Employment Record

Pay rent, phone and utilities on time, because a good credit score helps you rent homes and get loans. Pay the Immigration Health Surcharge in full, so your health insurance through the NHS is in place.

Keep your payslips, contract and tax records in one folder, and scan every document the day you receive it.

6. Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Paying anyone who promises a guaranteed sponsored job or visa

❌ Applying to a company that is not on the sponsor register

❌ Accepting a salary below the going rate for the occupation code

❌ Assuming a help-desk or support role qualifies as a skilled job

❌ Ignoring the TB test, English proof or savings requirements

7. Timeline Overview

Stage Duration
Find sponsors and get an offer Not published; depends on the market and your profile
Use the Certificate of Sponsorship Apply within 3 months of receiving it
Apply ahead of your start date Up to 3 months before the start date
Visa decision from outside the UK Usually up to 3 weeks
Visa decision from inside the UK Usually up to 8 weeks
Settlement (indefinite leave to remain) 5 years under current rules; a 10-year baseline is proposed

8. The Smartest Time to Apply Is Now

It also means you apply while the five-year settlement rule is still the law for new Skilled Worker applicants.

Start with Step 1, and you will be ready when an employer is.

How to Transition to Permanent Residency and Build a New Life in the UK

Congratulations — you’ve gotten the offer, your visa is approved, and your bags are packed. But what happens next?

1. Understanding the PR Pathway

In the UK, permanent residence is called indefinite leave to remain (ILR), or settlement.

For a sponsored cloud engineer, the usual route is five years on a Skilled Worker visa, then an ILR application. That is permanent residence through work visa under today’s rules.

PR Eligibility Requirements:

  • Five years of continuous residence on a qualifying route, under the rules that currently apply
  • A salary at settlement that meets £41,700 or your code’s going rate if higher, according to law-firm summaries of the July 2025 changes
  • English at the level in force when you apply, with B2 due from 26 March 2027
  • A pass in the Life in the UK test
  • No more than 180 days outside the UK in any rolling 12 months

These are the current rules, and they are under review. As of October 2026, the five-year route is open and the 10-year baseline is not in the rules.

2. The Benefits of Permanent Residency

Here’s what you gain:

Live: you can live in the UK without a time limit.

Work: you can change employer without needing a sponsor.

Family: your partner and children may be able to settle under their own rules.

Stability: you are no longer tied to visa renewals.

Mobility: you can travel in and out, with limits on long absences.

Citizenship: you may be able to apply for British citizenship later, under separate rules.

3. How to Strengthen Your PR Application

a. Maintain a Clean Credit Score

Pay every bill on time and keep card balances low.

b. Keep Health Insurance Active

Pay the surcharge for the full visa length.

c. Stay Loyal to Your Employer

Check the effect on your visa before you leave your sponsor. A new job needs a new Certificate of Sponsorship and must meet the salary rules.

d. Use a Registered Immigration Lawyer

Ask for a regulated adviser who handles settlement cases.

4. Life After PR — What to Expect

You can choose any employer, which often brings stronger pay negotiation.

5. Real-World Example: From Work Visa to PR

An illustrative case, not a real person.

An engineer from Nairobi joins a licensed sponsor as a cloud engineer on £60,000 a year, which is above the £54,700 going rate for SOC 2134.

She keeps her payslips, stays within the absence limit and meets the English and Life in the UK requirements.

After five years, she applies for settlement with her payslips and employer letter.

Result: ILR, a stable career and the freedom to change employer.

6. Mistakes That Delay PR Approval

❌ Spending more than 180 days outside the UK in a rolling 12 months

❌ Letting your salary fall below the threshold at the settlement stage

❌ Missing the English or Life in the UK requirements

❌ Applying without checking the rules in force on the day you apply

❌ Relying on unregulated advisers

7. Your Roadmap to Financial Freedom

By your third year, it’s possible to:

Build a UK credit score and savings.

Move from a first rental into a better home.

Hold a stable cloud role with a salary above the going rate.

Plan the next step, such as an architect or security specialism.

8. Your Final Call to Action

Before you spend a pound, here is the plan.

First, check that your target job is at degree level (RQF 6) and find its occupation code.

Second, compare the going rate for the code with market pay.

Third, check each employer and its A rating on the register.

Fourth, prepare your English proof, savings and TB test.

Fifth, speak to a regulated immigration adviser before signing any contract.

A word on the current rules.

The government has proposed a 10-year baseline for settlement, with 15 years for Skilled Workers in roles below RQF 6, and reductions for high earners. As of October 2026, no final rules or start date have been published, and it is not confirmed whether people already in the UK will be protected.

9. Final Words

The UK is not just a place to work — it’s a place to start over, grow wealth, and build legacy.

You don’t need luck — you need a plan. And that plan starts with one bold move: checking your occupation code and your salary against the official rules.

Remember: Every successful migrant once stood exactly where you are — uncertain, hopeful, but determined.

Take that step with a clear plan, because in a few years your story could inspire others to believe it’s possible.
